Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Go out and do the things you have been wanting to do. Be true to yourself and learn more about yourself than you think you already do.
Learn new things. Go to new places. Do things alone. Go watch that movie you really want to see even when no one else is available. Be independent. Don’t set your time to coincide with other people’s availabilities. Be confident in knowing you can and should be the only person who is in control of their happiness and emotions.
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Don’t be afraid to spend time alone with yourself. Be brave and courageous. Push past your self imposed comfort zone and experience new things. Learn new things. Try new foods. Explore different hiking trails. The only way to change your life is by doing. Take action. Don’t dwell and ponder “what if”. Go out and do things.
Even if things don’t turn out how you would’ve wanted, try something else and start over again. The point is to keep moving forward. Don’t live within your mental fears and limitations. Don’t be afraid to change your routines.
Doing things outside of your normal daily routine is the key to change. Get up an hour earlier. Take a different route to work. Eat something different for lunch. Read a book instead of watching TV. Go to bed an hour earlier. Make it a habit to make at least one decision that differs from your normal daily routine every day.
Eagle & Bison originally started out as a simple daily reminder to myself to live a more enjoyable life. It was a simple little mind-hack I figured out I could use in order to break the monotony of life by going out of my way to do small, random things that are not a part of any daily routine. The little reminder that I kept telling myself over and over was two simple words; live unusual.
Basically I had a lot of things I wanted to do or try, but that little nagging voice of self-doubt would always tell me it wasn’t worth it to try something or that I would be bored if I went to a certain place. So one day I decided that I was done listening to that voice and decided to just do what I wanted and make decisions with my gut instead of my brain. What ended up happening was that I was actually enjoying doing the things I set out to do and started having more fun on my own. All it took was a simple shift to a specific mind-set that allowed me to overcome the irrational voice of self-doubt that I’m sure clouds a lot of people’s judgements of themselves.
Only recently I’ve come to realize that my ultimate passion in life is nature and science and my preferred medium of art is photography and videography. The reason this project exists is because I plan to use photography, videography, audio, and design as a way to document my journey of continuing to push past the voice of self-doubt that occasionally makes itself heard.
I’m always looking for ways to improve upon myself through many of the skills I possess and I felt that I had a unique opportunity to present the world with my simple mind-hack to hopefully inspire others to adopt that reminder and use it in their everyday lives.
Live unusual, because life begins outside of your comfort zone.
My name is Raul Esquivel and I’m a 28 year old artist born raised in Los Angeles, CA. I’m known as a designer and illustrator to most, a musician and photographer to others, and a person who never stops creating things to almost anyone who knows me.
When I’m not busy making things, I enjoy being in nature or visiting the Griffith Observatory. I also love drawing and watching documentaries regularly (although I almost never watch TV).
